The installation of a concrete, artificial riverbed for the Kleinbach had brought about serious hydro-biological dysfunction. Restoration has made it possible to safeguard and enhance the natural heritage of Herrlisheim whilst striking a balance between ecological needs and flood prevention.
A programme of restoration of the riverbed and banks, working in collaboration with a landscape architect, together with the construction of dykes for flood prevention.
Reconstituting the riverbed (using gravel), restoring the banks by means of vegetation engineering, flood protection (hydraulic modelling and sizing of dykes), varying river facies (narrowing and widening of the riverbed) and stabilisation of the riverbed using micro-weirs.
Project begun in 2007, work completed in 2010. Investment in this project has been 2 million euros excluding taxes.
