The pumping and treatment station at Griesheim-sur-Souffel was built with the aim of diversifying/securing water resources and improving the quality of water distributed to subscribers by noticeably decreasing its hardness.

Examples of the approach taken

Besides lowering iron and manganese rates as a lawful obligation, the device also allows water hardness to be decreased. Pumped from deep underground, the water does not contain any micropolluants, and is virtually nitrate-free.

Examples of technical solutions implemented

Decarbonation: this treatment consists of extracting iron, manganese and part of the limestone contained in the water.
The reclamation of by-products: the limestone extracted in liquid form from sludge tanks is dehydrated using a belt filter to reduce the water content of the final product. These by-products are used in agriculture where they are used as a calcic enriching agent for acidic soil.
The station was also designed to fit perfectly into the landscape, be innovative in terms of eco-design and excellent on an environmental level (installation of solar panels, “zero pesticide” outdoor installations …).

Summary of know-how on the site

The operation of the station: pumping with reclamation of by-products, via key stages such as ventilation, decarbonation, filtration or disinfection.

Key figures

Commissioning date: July 2014
48 communes served i.e. 18,000 subscribers

  • At Griesheim-sur-Souffel: 2 then 91 and 96 m of depth for a capacity of 2×600 m3/h
  • At Lampertheim: 3 then 45 and 53 m of depth for a capacity of 900 m3/h

Treatment capacity: 1200 m3/j is 24 000 m3/j
